At age 11 she took lessons under the Suzuki method and began composing.〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Today in Music History )〕 Scurria graduated from Rice University in Houston, Texas, in 1995 with a bachelor's degree in composition and from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1998 with a master's in composition. She entered a doctoral program at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, in 2007, and has also studied at La Schola Cantorum in Paris, France. Teachers she studied with include: Chen Yi, Robert Sirota, Narcis Bonet, Anthony Kelley, and Stephen Jaffe.
